Pride and joy!

So Pride of Reading 2016 is over and what a fine time we had. Great winners, superb entertainment and lots of emotion.

It is a lot of work to produce and takes over your life, especially in the last few weeks before awards day.

There is nothing you can do when dancers fail to turn up for rehearsal, singers let you down and winners can't make the ceremony. We just try to pull out all the stops, keep smiling through gritted teeth and try to make it work for everyone.

And it does. When you see the winners' faces, their smiles and tears, it is all worthwhile. When you reunite a man who nearly drowned and the hero who saved him it's just great.

And when footballers and TV stars take time to record congratulations videos, it's marvellous.

You hope for a rest afterwards but there is a printed supplement to produce, a sponsor pack to get ready for 2017's potential sponsors, a theme to work out - and much more.

Despite my co-organiser Sally Swift and I wanting to lie down in a darkened room for a week or two, we can't.

So onwards to 2017 and to the best yet!
